The Laws of Pain

Every now and again I get a little brainspace and am able to think deeper than average (for me) thoughts. Today, it was the subject of pain.

I’m quite struck by the number of times I’ve been in a conversation that involves comparing pain. Sometimes it’s supportive, but many times it almost becomes a contest β€” who’s got it worse. As if there’s some sort of nobility in having a crappy life.

I’m more of the mindset of a Spider Robinson quote, “Shared pain is diminished, shared joy is increased.”

There is nobility in having difficult circumstances, and there is no shame in “having it easy.” You can be just as patient and gracious and kind β€”orβ€” just as much as a total jerk in good or bad circumstances.

So, I’ve decided to write the “Laws of Pain.” Please, feel free to share your thoughts!
